A space is more than an empty place

A poet can increases a poem's impact by adding whitespace within lines. In her poem, The Poet's Occasional Alternative, Grace Paley used this technique within lines 2, 5, and 6. Notice the difference it makes.

The Poet's Occasional Alternative
by Grace Paley
I was going to write a poem
I made a pie instead it took
about the same amount of time
of course the pie was a final
draft a poem would have had some
distance to go days and weeks and
much crumpled paper
You can read the rest of the five-stanza poem here.
